Two square granite fountains surrounded by trees. The 9/11 memorial in New York is a peaceful and calm spot in the heart of downtown Manhattan. Many years before I started going regularly, I had gone to New York with a friend who had tickets to see Letterman. One of our stops was the World Trade Center observation deck. So, while I don't know any of the names etched into it, the memorial has some personal meaning to me. Standing there, listening to the cascading water, staring at the black void of the fountains, I can still feel the towers looming overhead. Glinting in the sun and too tall to comprehend. The memory is more impressive than the reality every could have been, but I think that's the nature of ghosts.
