Crystal
My parents have a collection of crystal. It hasn't really changed in years, but I remember it slowly growing through my childhood. I believe the collection started after they were married when my dad's parents gave them the first pieces. Prior to the war, when they were still in Germany, they had run a shop that sold crystal and always loved the way the light shone through it, so they felt it was important for my parents to have a collection of their own. Or at least, that's the story that I remember about the origin of the collection. For the most part, the crystal sits in their cupboard not really doing much. Unlike their fine china, which gets used at least weekly, the crystal is rarely used. I think, most frequently, my dad uses it when pouring cognac for my uncle after a big family meal.
This post was inspired by the Inktober prompts. While the idea of Inktober is that people will do a drawing a day, in ink, based on a prompt, I'm going to attempt to instead use the prompts to try to write something more regularly. (I'm not going to pretend that I'll actually succeed in doing this daily for all of October.) The prompts for the year are below:
