Compass

Sometime late in elementary school, my class went on a trip to, I think, Camp Monahan. I know it was at least an overnight trip, but it may even have been multiple days. One of the activities we did was orienteering. My recollection of how it works is that you are given a map with distances and directions and you have to follow those directions to reach various checkpoints. The only tool you have is a compass to find the direction and counting your steps to estimate your distance travelled. I recall that we had practiced in advance in the playground at school, but it's one thing to do something like that on flat open ground and another to do it in a wooded area with hills. I did not do well. I don't really remember much else about the trip. There were a lot of mosquitos and I think some people got ticks. Also, I didn't eat a whole lot. Either I was a picky eater back then (probably) or the food was terrible (likely). Not eating much did save me from the food poisoning that almost everyone else had, so not the worst thing.
