Surprise!

It's Sunday night and I'm watching TV with my parents after dinner and idly playing with my phone when a message from Robyn arrives. At that moment, I'm confused and delighted and completely irrational. Tears of happiness in my eyes, I take a moment to think.

I first met Robyn when she was performing at the Creative City Centre. I was enamored with her music and sent her a message on Facebook to find out when she would be playing again. We became Facebook friends and I saw her perform several more times before her first daughter was born. Since then she's been busy being a mom to three young children so hasn't performed much, but she's still one of my favorite local singer/songwriters.

I met Suzy through Twitter. I don't remember whether it was someone's Follow Friday or Twitter's list of suggested accounts to follow, but, what I remember is that whenever she tweeted about a new blog post I would drop everything to read it. Her writing often moves me to laughter and to tears. (I suggest reading her piece on the birth of her son.) While I don't remember how I found her Twitter account, the first time I talked to her in person was when I went to see Dan Mangan at Darke Hall. She had blogged about going and I wanted to introduce myself. In a surprising bit of bravery for me, I actually succeeded in talking to her and since then, I see her at all the interesting events around town.

These two women are creative and inspiring and wonderful and I'm lucky to count them as friends so when Robyn's message arrives inviting me to a surprise party for Suzy celebrating the launch of a book containing some her essays, I'm excited and nothing is going to keep me from going. Sorry Age of Electric, Brodie Moniker, and the basket of laundry in my basement, you'll have to wait for another day.

Now it is Tuesday afternoon and my stomach is telling me I'm either hungry or nervous. Work distracts me temporarily, but by the time I get home I'm certain it is butterflies not hunger. I've never been to a surprise party before and I don't know who will be there. It's a bit terrifying in a delightful sort of way. I end up getting to the Artful Dodger a bit too early, but Robyn arrives soon after me and then everyone else trickles in and they are all so nice that my nerves finally calm down. When Suzy arrives, she is genuinely surprised and exuberant in her delight. We all eat cake and talk and have a wonderful evening. I'll be thinking about this for days.

Thanks to Kate for organizing this, Robyn for inviting me, and Suzy for making me feel so welcome. I'm so grateful for my friends today.
