Choices

Regina Folk Festival's annual Winterruption started today. Three nights split between two venues forcing you to choose which you most wanted to see. They didn't make it easy, just look at the lineup:

January 19th at The Exchange: Elliott Brood, Begonia, IsKwé
January 19th at The Artesian: Rosie & The Riveters, Quique Escamilla, Danny Olliver
January 20th at The Exchange: Said the Whale, Northcote, The Garrys
January 20th at The Artesian: Grownups Read Things They Wrote as Children (live podcast recording)
January 21st at Knox Metropolitan Church: Fred Penner matinee
January 21st at The Exchange: Connie Kaldor, Heather Bishop, Annette
January 21st at The Artesian: Danny Michel, William Prince, Mohsin Zaman

Figuring out what to see comes down to balancing my desire to see musicians I haven't seen before and knowing what I enjoy. I saw both Elliott Brood and Danny Olliver not that long ago and hadn't seen any of the others live, so really it was kind of a coin flip. Ultimately, the ability to walk to the Artesian and knowing that at least one person I knew would be there (Hi, Ava) won me over.

Was that the right choice? I don't know.

Danny Olliver played my favorite song of his, "Untitled", an instrumental piece where he makes an acoustic guitar make seemingly impossible sounds. Quique Escamilla sang Johnny Cash like it was written for a Mexican Mariachi band. Rosie & The Riveters danced and harmonized and even rapped. I didn't win the 50/50 draw, but I definitely had a good time.

Suzy was at the Exchange and seemed to love every minute of it, so I don't think there was a wrong choice. I'm hoping she'll torture me with more details in her blog at some point.

Tomorrow I'm off to the Exchange (at least in part because the show at the Artesian is sold out) and then it is back to the Artesian on Saturday. (Actually Saturday had a third option. The symphony is playing one of my favorite Gershwin tunes, "An American in Paris" among other things, but going to that would probably just make me want to go back to New York.)

Now I better get to sleep so I can enjoy the rest of this weekend. Happy Winterruption Regina.
