30 Minutes

Blog posts sometimes take me far too long to write, but perhaps having a collection of half finished posts is normal. At any rate, I've got about 30 minutes until the laundry is done and after that it's time for bed, so let's see what I can do.

The early part of last week seemed kind of quiet around town. I ended up going to things that I probably wouldn't normally go to.

On Wednesday, it was Soiled Doves, the Isotopes, and the Real McKenzies at the Exchange. That is to say, I went to a punk show. I was thankful for my ear plugs, confused by the Isotopes band member who was wearing nothing but a jock strap and denim vest and didn't play a musical instrument, and fascinated by the Real McKenzies angry celtic sound. I don't think I've seen bagpipes used quite that way before.

On Thursday, I hung out with friends at Ward Schell's opening at Slate gallery. Slate openings seem like the place to be for the art crowd. I used to go to a lot of gallery openings and never quite figured out what to do with myself at them. I'd look at the art and eat snacks and then try to find people I knew to talk to and generally failed, but at least there were snacks. These days I go to concerts instead.

On Friday, I went Brodie Moniker's show at Cloud 9. It was a late show and there were three opening acts (Hollow Oax, Homo Monstrous, and Robot Hive) that I hadn't ever heard before. Robot Hive stood out and they got people up and dancing, but I was so tired by the time they played that I couldn't stay to the end and actually missed Brodie's set. Cloud 9 is kind of a strange venue. I've been there once before. It's on Broad street across from the old Sears Clearance Center. You go in through a reasonably well marked side door, up a flight of sketchy looking stairs, and through a door that makes you wonder if you'll come out alive, but once you are inside, there are gorgeous brick walls, red molding shaped like clouds, pool tables in the back, chairs suitable for lounging, a small stage, and a space for dancing. It's a bit of an odd space in a not ideal location and I kind of wonder how long it will be around. (Of course, I also wondered that the last time I was there and that was at least five months ago.)

My 30 minutes are up. Time to check the laundry.

Laundry is done and there's still time to finish this up before bed.

There were lots of options on Saturday, Jeffery Straker playing with the Symphony, Soap Box Duo were playing at the Creative City Centre, and there was a Grassroots Regina show, but I ended up going to the Sask Sampler at Bushwakker. A couple of the announced bands, The Wolfe and The Garrys, ended up being unavailable, but that still left In With The Old, Denise Valle, Scott Richmond, and Government Town. I managed to get there earlier enough to secure a prime seat at the bar with a good view and I ended up winning the 50/50 draw, so it was a pretty awesome night.

Lots of good things coming up this week too. Jenny Berkel is opening for Jenn Grant on Tuesday night, Megan Nash is playing with Bears in Hazenmore on Friday night, and Tropezon is cooking breakfast/lunch at the Farmer's market on Saturday. I'm hoping they have Tacos al Pastor. Actually, I have to stop thinking about that or I'll drool all over my keyboard, so I best actually wrap this up.

60 minutes total including the laundry. Not bad.
